Why Not All Shilajit Is the Same — and How to Tell the Difference

If It's All "Shilajit," Why Does It Look So Different?
Walk into any health store, or search online, and "shilajit" describes an enormous range of products — sticky black resin, fine powders, pressed tablets, capsules, even liquid tinctures. Some are scraped straight off a rock face and sold with barely any processing. Others pass through multiple stages of filtration and independent lab verification before they ever reach a jar. The word itself carries no guarantee of source, purity, or potency.
That matters because shilajit, by definition, is a mineral-rich exudate that forms over centuries in high-altitude rock crevices. Its reputation rests on a specific combination of fulvic acid, humic acid, and over 85 trace minerals — compounds that are highly sensitive to how the resin is harvested, dried, and filtered. Get any one of those steps wrong, and what's left may still legally be called "shilajit," even though it bears little resemblance to the resin that earned the name its place in Ayurvedic medicine.
The honest answer to "why does shilajit quality vary so much" is that almost nothing about the term is standardised. There's no global grading system, no enforced purity threshold, and no requirement to disclose how a product was processed. That gap is exactly where quality differences — and shortcuts — happen.

Four Things Sold as "Pure Shilajit"
Before you can compare brands, it helps to know what category you're actually looking at. Most products on the market fall into one of these four groups.
Raw, Unrefined Rock Shilajit
Sold as "wild," "raw," or "unprocessed," this is shilajit scraped directly from rock faces with little more than hand-sorting. It can contain soil, plant fragments, and whatever heavy metals were present in that specific rock — none of it typically tested or removed.
Mass-Market Powders & Capsules
To make shilajit shelf-stable and easy to encapsulate, many brands heat-dry or spray-dry the resin, then blend it with bulking agents such as maltodextrin, rice flour, or silica. It's fast and cheap — but heat degrades fulvic acid, and fillers dilute whatever is left.
Single-Filtered Commercial Resin
A step up — the resin is filtered once to remove the largest visible debris, then packaged. This clears obvious contaminants but leaves finer particulates untouched, and potency can swing significantly from batch to batch.
Multi-Stage Filtered, Lab-Tested Resin
Resin is harvested at altitude, sun-dried without heat, then passed through a ten-stage filtration process that progressively removes impurities while preserving the fulvic and humic acid structure. Every batch is then verified in independent labs before it's sold.

Six Factors That Separate One Shilajit From Another
Altitude & Harvest Location
Authentic Himalayan shilajit forms over centuries in rock crevices above roughly 16,000ft, where extreme temperature shifts compress plant matter and minerals into resin. Material harvested at lower altitudes, or near roads and farmland, forms differently and is exposed to pollutants the high-altitude resin never encounters.
Drying Method
Traditional preparation dries the resin slowly under the sun. Many commercial producers speed this up with heat-based pasteurisation, which can destroy a meaningful share of the fulvic and humic acid compounds that give shilajit its reputation.
Filtration Depth
Raw resin contains rock particles, plant debris, and microbial material that need to be removed. A single pass clears the largest debris; a multi-stage process progressively refines the resin into a clean, consistent paste without chemical solvents.
Fulvic & Humic Acid Levels
These compound groups are largely responsible for shilajit's mineral-transport properties, and their concentration varies enormously between products — shaped directly by source quality, drying method, and filtration. A product can call itself "shilajit" with only a fraction of the active compounds found in properly processed resin.
What's Added — or Left In
Some products are stretched with fillers, binders, or flavouring to increase yield and cut cost. Others contain unrefined material never meant to be consumed without further processing. The cleanest products contain exactly one ingredient: filtered shilajit resin.
Independent Lab Verification
Heavy metals, microbial contamination, and fulvic acid content can only be confirmed through third-party testing. Many brands don't test, test inconsistently, or don't publish results. Testing every batch — and publishing it — is the only way to know what's in the jar.
